One of the coolest experiences of my life—my first time on a ferry (Mohembo ferry). Back then, it was the only crossing, before the bridges were built, and the queue stretched for kilometers. Just sitting there, watching everything line up and slowly glide across the water—it was low-key epic. We stayed at a missionary camp on one of the main islands, run by an old friend of my uncle’s. He’d sold his entire motor dealership and poured it into missionary work—enormous respect. From there, we went out on makoros, African-style gondolas, for island tours. That’s when things got intense: we accidentally came between a full-grown male African elephant and his cow. The elephant started charging, and in an instant, the guy rowing our makoro was fighting to steer us out of the way. I nearly went overboard as he struggled to keep the boat from flipping, heart pounding, while the others in their makoros scrambled behind the papyrus, hiding—and, of course, caught the whole thing on video. For a few terrifying seconds, I was sure we were done for. The elephant leapt into the shallow water like mines exploding, stampeding from its little island. I had a choice: jump in and risk whatever else was lurking in the water, or pray for dear life, as everything seemed to slow down. The sheer power and size of that animal… unforgettable. Absolute adrenaline like nothing else. The wildlife was unreal—tigerfish the size of small sharks, Nile crocodiles the size of Big Gustav from Rwanda (if you’ve seen Primeval, based on the actual warlord Little Gustav and the man-eating crocodile Big Gustav), and water so clean you could drink straight from the delta. Visibility was at least 8 meters, crystal clear. Tempting to jump in and swim… but if the crocodiles don’t get you, the hippos will.

- 奧卡萬戈三角洲的 Makoro - 抵達了馬翁，波札那的入口城市。 進入了奧卡萬戈三角洲。 莫科羅（Mokoro）是一種類似獨木舟的長筏，每艘可以坐兩個遊客， 後方嚮導兼船夫， 以長竿撐著水底沿著有著長蘆葦的水道滑行。 用手掌舀起水是偏紅的土色， 但是水質是好的，用來洗手完全沒有問題。 在不遠處有幾頭河馬， 發出大而低沉，像是飽嗝一般慵懶的聲音。 晨間水光，在一片綠色的蘆葦裡發亮。 烏黑的枯木從水裏冒出， 有些偶然在水上的孤島， 上方是突起的巨大白蟻丘。 這裡就像是納米比亞紅色沙漠中 死亡谷的對極。 死亡谷的枯木，背景是荒蕪的沙； 而奧卡萬戈三角洲裡的枯木， 根部卻吸滿了豐盈的水巢。 奧卡萬戈三角洲是世上最大的內陸三角洲，面積有近台灣的一半大小。 數百種特有鳥類居於此處，而最著名的是白色與黑色羽毛的魚鷹； 有大量的象、斑馬和跳羚， 雖然不及我在埃托夏看到的數量， 但是在埃托夏我們一直待在車上， 而在這裡，我們可以用雙腳走向動物，扒開大象的糞便、追蹤河馬的腳印，以及稍微破壞一點新生的白蟻巢，看看裡面的白蟻是如何忙得不可開交。 現在是乾季的末期，也是太陽最烈的時候。雖然海拔將近一千，但烈日下的我們仍處於過度曝曬之下。 內陸三角洲裡雨季氾濫的河道， 到了現在仍然遍佈在各個低窪， 只是整體面積縮小。 我們在細細的水道中前進， 那是身材碩大的河馬， 在水中硬生生輾壓出的通道， 如同大象在叢林中開道， 在大象通過後，所有的動物便得以通過那樣。 嚮導告訴我們， 大象的領域非常之廣，一天可以移動一百五十到兩百公里， 牠們完全有可能在納米比亞一路尋找食物，而在波札那的叢林上大號。 這樣一來，牠們便將植物的種子跟滋養生命的營養帶到了遠方。 大象一天要吃很多的草，而其中的營養，大約有百分之六十完全沒有消化—— 我們可以用手撥開半乾燥的大象糞便，而沒有聞到任何臭味， 裡面都是植物的纖維、種子和與消化液混合的土狀物質， 因為大象吃的植物種類眾多，因此所有的草食動物，都能從大象的糞便中，找到一點自己可以消化的東西； 而這些食草的動物，自然也引來了獅子、豹和非洲鬣狗這些獵食者。 但奧卡萬戈三角洲不會有獅子。 因為獅子的身體，適合在乾燥的大草原上奔跑，而不擅長在水中潛伏，搜捕獵物。 我在想如果把老虎搬到這裡， 應該就能輕易成為這裡的王。 奧卡萬戈另一個跟索蘇斯弗雷死亡谷對極的點在於， 死亡谷是一個拍照極好看，但現場看來略顯平淡的景點， 但奧卡萬戈相反， 身在其中感受水波拍打船板的清涼，長竿在水中划動的寧靜療癒聲響， 遠方水鳥與河馬的音聲。 尤其是在酷熱的日曬中， 這一切令感官療癒非常的體驗， 卻是相機所完全無能為力。 拍起來，總覺得無法表達哪怕只有一半。 我看著沼澤地上方薄薄一層水面上， 以各種姿態蜿蜒捲曲的枯木， 心想：難怪它們會這麼像。 因為也許這幅景象， 就是死亡谷尚未乾涸時， 千年前豐饒的過去再現（De javu）。
