The Atlantic Road, or Rota dos Atlânticos as it’s known in Portuguese, is a truly remarkable journey along Norway’s western coastline. It’s not simply a road; it’s an experience, a testament to human ingenuity and the raw power of the North Atlantic. This unique route connects several small islands, weaving its way across a series of narrow channels and inlets that were formed by ancient landslides and the relentless sea.
The bridges themselves are the stars of the show, dramatically curving low and level, almost hugging the water’s edge. The Stoa Sundet Bridge is particularly striking, with its pronounced curves and a visual illusion created by the way it’s built – it appears almost unfinished, a deliberate integration with the surrounding landscape. Construction proved incredibly challenging, delayed repeatedly by 12 fierce hurricanes that repeatedly submerged or battered the work in progress. The bridges are designed to flex and adapt to the sea’s constant movement, accepting its force rather than resisting it.
Traffic on the road is carefully managed, stopping when conditions are unsafe – there’s no alternative route. It’s a place to slow down, to appreciate the dramatic scenery and the feeling of being so close to the ocean. Visitors consistently praise its beauty, although some note that it can get quite busy during peak season. If you’re seeking a drive that’s both visually stunning and profoundly evocative, the Atlantic Road offers an unforgettable adventure.

Nothing much to say, just a wonderful little place to both sightsee and fish.
Schöne Strecke, aber zuviel los in der Saison. Die berühmte Brücke sieht spektakulärer aus, als sie ist.
