Sintra is a truly magical place, nestled amongst the hills just an hour’s journey from Lisbon. It’s a destination that rewards those who take the time to explore beyond a simple day trip – trust us, you’ll understand why once you’re here. The city’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a captivating labyrinth of narrow, cobbled streets, leading you past pastel-coloured buildings and charming squares.
Perhaps the most compelling reason to stay overnight is to experience Sintra’s incredible palaces and estates without the throngs of day visitors. Places like Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, and the Moorish Castle are breathtaking, and exploring them in relative peace allows you to truly appreciate their unique beauty and intricate details. You can easily reach Sintra by autocarro (bus) from Lisbon – the journey itself offers stunning views of the Portuguese countryside.
Don’t rush your visit; allow yourself to wander, to get lost in the beauty of the gardens, and to savour the local pastries. A pequeno-almoço (breakfast) of pastel de nata is a must! There are plenty of delightful restaurants offering traditional Portuguese cuisine. We found that spending a night in Sintra transformed our experience, allowing us to connect with the spirit of this enchanting town in a way that simply wasn't possible with a quick visit.
