Autumn travel deals in Europe: where prices are falling

Autumn travel deals in Europe: where prices are falling

Autumn is still one of the best times to look for a European trip with fewer crowds and better prices, but the saving is no longer automatic everywhere. New Expedia data reported by Euronews shows a more mixed picture: some city breaks become more expensive after summer, while other destinations get noticeably cheaper. For travelers planning September, October or November breaks, the main lesson is simple. The destination matters, but the month matters too. November is often where the stronger bargains appear.

Autumn is cheaper abroad, but not everywhere

Expedia's figures suggest that international hotel stays are still cheaper in autumn than in summer on average. Outside the UK, hotel rates fall by about 7% after the peak season, according to the data cited by Euronews.

The biggest drops are not necessarily in obscure places. The Algarve, the Greek islands and several well-known Mediterranean cities still become more affordable once the summer rush fades.

Within the UK, however, the pattern is different. Expedia found that some city hotel prices are higher in autumn than in summer, with Birmingham and Liverpool showing particularly strong increases. That is a useful reminder that "shoulder season" does not work the same way in every market. Conferences, events, football weekends, university calendars and business travel can all push urban hotel prices up after August.

The Algarve and Greek islands stand out

For Portuguese travel planning, the Algarve is one of the most relevant findings. Expedia data points to lower autumn rates in Albufeira and Faro, with prices up to 30% below summer levels in some cases.

That makes sense. The region remains warm enough for beach walks, boat trips, coastal trails and long outdoor meals, but demand usually softens once school holidays end. Travelers who do not need peak beach weather can often get better value from accommodation and flights.

The same pattern appears in parts of Greece. Mykonos and Kos are also listed among places where autumn rates can be up to 30% lower than in summer. The tradeoff is that nightlife, beach clubs and ferry schedules may be quieter later in the season, so it is worth checking what is still operating before booking.

November may be the sweet spot

Expedia says international stays booked through its platform are, on average, 10% cheaper in November than in summer. That does not mean every November trip is cheap, but it gives travelers a useful starting point.

If you are flexible, compare the same destination across all three autumn months. September can still behave like late summer in beach regions. October often gives a better balance of weather and price. November usually brings the deeper discounts, especially in destinations where the main draw is food, culture, scenery or city exploring rather than swimming.

Places such as Benidorm, Alicante and Istanbul are mentioned as destinations where autumn, especially November, can be less expensive. For Istanbul in particular, autumn can be a strong compromise: cooler temperatures, rich city life and fewer summer crowds.

Expedia also looked at which international destinations were gaining the most autumn interest from UK travelers. The comparison used searches made between April 13 and July 12, 2026, for travel between September 1 and November 30, 2026, compared with the same period in 2025.

The top ten trending destinations were:

  • Luxembourg: +470%
  • Curaçao: +210%
  • Strasbourg, France: +170%
  • Annecy, France: +165%
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico: +160%
  • Beijing, China: +150%
  • Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy: +115%
  • Sarandë, Albania: +110%
  • Budva, Montenegro: +85%
  • Ljubljana, Slovenia: +80%

Seven of the ten are in Europe, and several are not the obvious first-choice city breaks. That matters because autumn travelers appear to be looking beyond the standard capitals and beach resorts.

Why Luxembourg is suddenly interesting

The biggest search increase belongs to Luxembourg, up 470% in Expedia's data. It is a compact country, easy to combine with nearby France, Belgium or Germany, and well suited to a short autumn break.

Luxembourg works especially well for travelers who want a city break without the scale of Paris, Amsterdam or London. The old town, valleys, museums, castles and free public transport make it practical for a few days, while autumn gives the trip a slower rhythm.

The sharp rise in interest does not automatically mean Luxembourg will be expensive, but it does mean travelers should compare accommodation early if they are visiting on popular weekends.

France, Italy and the Balkans are also gaining attention

In France, Strasbourg and Annecy both appear high on the list. Strasbourg is especially appealing in autumn because it combines canals, Alsatian food, museums and easy train access. Annecy offers lake views, mountain scenery and a smaller-city atmosphere before the winter ski season takes over.

Cortina d'Ampezzo is another interesting entry. It is best known as a ski resort, but autumn can suit travelers who want mountain scenery before snow becomes the main attraction. Services may be more limited between high seasons, so accommodation, lifts and local transport should be checked carefully.

Further south, Sarandë in Albania and Budva in Montenegro point to continuing interest in the Balkans. These destinations can offer lower prices than many established Mediterranean resorts, though autumn travelers should pay close attention to transport schedules, restaurant openings and weather patterns.

How to use the data before booking

Search trends are useful, but they are not a booking rule. A destination becoming popular can still be good value, while a destination with falling hotel prices may have higher flight costs, weaker transport options or fewer seasonal services.

Before booking an autumn trip, compare:

  • Hotel prices across September, October and November.
  • Flight prices on nearby dates.
  • Weekday versus weekend rates.
  • Local events, school holidays and conferences.
  • Weather averages for the exact month.
  • Whether tours, ferries, beach services or restaurants remain open.
  • Cancellation conditions if the trip depends on weather.

It is also worth checking nearby airports or neighboring towns. In shoulder season, a small change in base can make the same trip cheaper without making the itinerary harder.

Best bets for different travelers

For beach-adjacent value, look first at the Algarve, Greek islands, Alicante or Benidorm, especially if you can travel outside weekends.

For a city break with culture and food, Luxembourg, Strasbourg, Ljubljana and Istanbul are strong autumn candidates.

For scenery, consider Annecy, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Montenegro or Albania, but check seasonal transport before committing.

For the lowest risk, choose a place you would enjoy even if the weather is cooler or wetter than expected. Autumn deals are most valuable when the trip still works without perfect summer conditions.

Autumn travel is still worth planning carefully

The old idea that everything gets cheaper after summer is too simple. Expedia's data shows that autumn can still offer good value, but the best deals depend on destination, timing and flexibility.

For Portugal-based travelers, the Algarve remains one of the clearest opportunities. For wider European trips, the strongest value may come from combining familiar shoulder-season destinations with smaller cities that are gaining attention but not yet overwhelmed.

If you can travel in November, compare it seriously. It may not deliver beach weather everywhere, but it can turn a crowded summer destination into a calmer and more affordable trip.
