Guimarães Castle, a truly remarkable landmark, holds a significant place in Portuguese history. Often referred to as the “Cradle of Portugal,” this impressive structure boasts a fascinating past, dating back to the 9th century. Initially built to defend the monastery, it played a crucial role in protecting the region from attacks by Moors and Vikings – a testament to its strategic importance.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the castle stands as a powerful national symbol, believed to be the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king. Visitors can explore the well-preserved medieval walls and towers, imagining the battles and defenses of centuries past. While recent reviews highlight ongoing renovations which have temporarily limited access to the interior, the exterior views and the surrounding area remain captivating. It’s easily accessible from Porto, approximately 40 minutes by car or autocarro.
Entry to the castle requires a ticket, which can be purchased at a location a little way from the site – it’s advisable to check current opening hours before your visit. Many visitors enjoy the 3D experience available, particularly suitable for families with children. Despite some recent negative feedback regarding the value of the entry fee and the impact of the renovations, the historical significance and imposing presence of Guimarães Castle continue to make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in Portugal’s rich heritage. Don't forget to explore the walls for a fantastic view!

No pagues. No vale nada. No hay nada que ver. Das una vuelta a la muralla y ya. Ni la foto. 5€ timo
1 star because it's the minimum. Paid to entry but due to renovation works you basically can not see anything from the Castle. I would not recommend going anytime soon, at least during the renovations. Money thrown on the trash.
Paga-se para entrar e não há nada demais para ver! A visitação dentro do castelo já não acontece Melhor ver de fora
