Where to Find It and How to Get There
If you've heard about the famous Bifanas do Afonso, you're probably wondering where this legendary tavern is located. You'll find it at Rua da Madalena 146, next to Largo do Caldas, right in the heart of Lisbon.
Look for a small corner tavern, likely packed with people. That's the one! The queue at the door is practically a landmark — if there's no queue, you've either arrived too early or too late.
What Makes These Bifanas Special
Bifanas do Afonso elevates the humble pork sandwich to another level. The secret? It's everything combined: the thin, tender meat, sliced to perfection; the glorious sauce with garlic, lard and spices that soaks the bread in an almost indecent way; and the sturdy bread that heroically holds half a dozen slices of well-fried pork.
Each bite is a feast fit for the gods — we're not exaggerating. The meat has that characteristic pork flavour, perfectly seasoned, with a texture that melts in your mouth.
Prices and Options
A plain bifana costs just €3 — an absurdly good deal for the quality you receive. If you fancy something more indulgent, the cheese version is €5. The cheese is excellent quality, though it slightly tones down the meat flavour — it depends on your preferences.
At the counter, you'll find spicy oil and mustard to season to taste. Warning: the spicy oil is not for the faint-hearted, so if you can't handle heat, go easy.
To accompany, there's draught Super Bock in two sizes — the small one is perfect for a relaxed lunch.
The Atmosphere
The interior space is tiny — it fits five to six people, but very tightly packed. Our suggestion? Don't even try. Eat outside, where there's a small square with a bench right in front. Bifanas do Afonso are meant to be eaten on the go, along the way, no fuss.
The owner spends all day in the same position, serving sandwich after sandwich with admirable efficiency. The queue might look intimidating, but it moves quickly.
Practical Tips
- Payment: Cash only
- Best time: Avoid peak hours if you don't want to wait long
- Watch out: Be careful of cars turning into the street while you queue
Is It Worth It?
Absolutely. Bifanas do Afonso is on everyone's lips for a reason — they're among the best in Lisbon, and the competition is fierce. Tourists and locals queue side by side, united by the same mission: to taste the bifana that has achieved legendary status.
If you've never been, you have no idea what you're missing. Head up to Largo do Caldas and see for yourself.

Honestly, worth every bit of the hype and more. Great pork sandwiches, and the price is even better. The meat is perfectly tender, has just a bit of that signature porky flavor that would want from a sandwich like this. They have some hot oil and something that looked like mustard, both are very good on it. The spicy oil is not mild, so if you don't like spicy food I'd recommend just putting a little bit on. I tried both the regular and the one with cheese, I liked both a lot, can't decide which is better. The cheese hides the pork flavor a bit which can be a positive or negative thing depending on how much you like pork. It is two whole euros extra so it's kind of a hefty upcharge but it is very good quality cheese, and at 3 euros for the normal and 5 euros for the one with cheese, both are still phenomenal deals. Really the only downside is there is usually a pretty long line but it moves quickly and it's to be expected given the quality and incredible value of the food. Just be careful of the cars that turn into the street!
Cash only place The bifanas here are very tasty! They're more flavorful and you can really taste the wine and spices. The pork is less tender than other places but it's still very good. The bread can be a bit too floury. There can be a huge line-up so if you see a short line-up, goooo. The Patanisca de Bacalhau (fish fillet sandwich) is a cold fish fillet sandwich which is a bit odd, but the fish is tasty. I wouldn't say get that unless you really wanted to try it. This place also has Super Bock on tap! You can get a big or small size, and the small size is perfect for me for a lunch drink. Be sure to give this place a try if you're getting bifanas!
Small takeout place for a Portuguese specialty, the Bifansa (stewed pork sandwich). Only 3 euros for the regular sandwich or 5 with cheese. Great portion size and definitely fantastic value at this price point. Highly recommend for a quick bite to eat. You can also add some chili oil and mustard. The bun was nice and soft too. Would definitely get it again!
Great meal or snack mid day. They were super fast, kind with tourists and we enjoyed that we were able to have a good Portuguese food on the go. Took 10 minutes from entering the line to getting our bifanas (the line had about 15 people in it), as there’s a small courtyard you can sit in, although it can be busy
I tried the famous bifana and honestly… it’s just very average. The price-to-quality ratio is fine, but I really don’t get why it’s so hyped. Nothing special, nothing memorable. I’m actually glad I didn’t have to wait the dozens of minutes I saw people queuing for two days earlier - because I definitely wouldn’t order it again.
