Zhangye Qicai Danxia Scenic Spot
Journey to Zhangye Qicai Danxia, a truly remarkable viewpoint nestled in the Gansu Province of China. This isn't just a landscape; it’s a masterpiece sculpted by nature over millions of years. The Danxia landform presents a breathtaking spectacle of naturally colored sandstone, resembling a painter’s palette splashed across rolling hills and dramatic cliffs.
The vibrant hues – deep reds, yellows, oranges, and even creams – are the result of specific mineral deposits within the ancient sandstone. Visiting during the winter months offers a particularly serene experience, with fewer crowds and the chance to witness the unique beauty of snow-capped formations. While popular, the area retains a sense of grandeur and provides a fascinating glimpse into Earth’s geological history, revealing layers of rock that tell a story of ancient climates and tectonic shifts. You’ll find a diverse range of visitors, drawn by the sheer visual impact of this extraordinary location.
Getting here is easily facilitated by local transport – an autocarro (local bus) is a convenient option. Consider purchasing protective shoe covers upon arrival to safeguard your footwear from the often sandy terrain. Allow ample time to explore the viewpoints and absorb the magic of this unforgettable landscape.

Came in winter and saw snow capped hills and mountains. It is a different type of experience. Quite some people visiting. This is an AAAAA attraction in zhangye and most visited. Guide told us it is super crowded in summer. 4 sights location and the 4th one is the main one.
Magical experience and scenery of the snow capped danxia! Highly recommended visiting in December when travellers are sparse.
Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological park is also known as the Rainbow Mountain in in China .The eco bus took us into some scenic spots where we view the splendid Danxia landscape from the timber board platforms and hiking on the well-paved stop paths from one sightseeing platform to another . Basically the higher you climb , the better view you get. Thus do prepared for some good hike on the walkways and steps to the Sightseeing Platform. But for those who prefer not to walk, there is hot air balloon and helicopter for the tour !! Each spot has its unique color combination and shape, all providing stunning views. Especially when the sun hits the mountain, they really do have rainbow pattern. Have your camera ready for a true panoramic view of the surrounding area, but just be warned that there be plenty of tourists crowding around for a photo opportunity as well. It is impressive and breathtaking how the colors of the mountains are beyond description and amazingly some natural rocks formation do tell a story too. Plenty of Sigboards around on the rock formations which is self explanatory !! The geological formation is unique & typical of sedimentary deposition process. 100+ million years ago, this area was a lake or low lying basin. Thru' the seasons, alluvial deposit siltstone (greyish deposit), mudstone (lighter brownish conglomerate with pebbles) & sandy lateritic reddish loose sandstone (due presence of iron oxide- Fe2O3 & FeO2) to become the present site. Over the geological time, tectonic forces push the lake bed upwards from West to East tilting the interbedded deposit layers. With weathering by wind & rain, the interbed layerings of different hue of colours appear...to form this Rainbow Mountain !! Another example of how nature can surprise.
Really amazing weather on today managed to take in the full experience of the Geo park it had some really stunning views definitely worth the entrance fee in my opinion there are 4 viewing areas and it’s recommended that you go for (1,2,4) and skip number 3 as it Isn’t very interesting overall worth it. You can fly drones there is you wish too as well. But do be careful
One of the most awe-inspiring and astonishing natural phenomenon / attraction in the world. It became a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2019 and is renowned for the colourful rock formations and the stunning landforms. The colours of the Danxia landform will become more apparent after rain. Walking around the park can easily take 2-3 hours.
