Located at the foot of a hill in the extreme south of the Serra da Lousã, in an area locally known as Serra do Espinhal or Serra de São João, is the "Aldeia do Xisto Ferraria de São João (Penela)". The area around the village is composed of two contrasting landscapes: the densely populated mountainside by original species of flora such as cork oak and oak trees, and the flat lands with fragile soils and wild vegetation. The urban structure of the site reflects the subsistence agriculture and livestock associated with its history, with a strong presence of popular architecture using local materials such as wood, schist, limestone, and quartzite. The village has a set of communal pens that in the past sheltered more than one thousand heads of cattle.
