Pastel de Nata – Guará Restaurant & Bakery, nestled in Vila Nova de Gaia, is a true gem for anyone seeking authentic Portuguese flavours and a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere. This isn’t just a bakery; it’s a delightful experience from morning ‘pequeno-almoço’ right through to evening meals.

We were absolutely captivated by the incredible pastel de nata – truly delicious, filled with that classic vanilla custard and a light, flaky pastry. But don't just stick to the traditional! Guará offers a remarkable range of choices, both sweet and savoury, catering to every palate. We wholeheartedly recommend trying the francesinha for dinner – a truly wow-worthy dish! And if burgers are your thing, the restaurant’s exceptional offerings are not to be missed.

What truly sets Guará apart is its commitment to inclusivity. It’s a fully vegan bakery, offering a stunning array of pastries, cakes, and even incredibly fancy and delicious donuts. Alongside these sweet treats, you’ll find takeaway snacks like pizza and savoury filled pastries. It’s a fantastic option for vegans and non-vegans alike. The prices are incredibly fair, and the staff are genuinely friendly and happy to chat – it’s no surprise we visited twice during our stay! You can easily reach the restaurant by ‘autocarro’ or taxi.

Sobre Vila Nova de Gaia

Vila Nova de Gaia, commonly known as Gaia, is a city in northern Portugal on the southern bank of the Douro River, facing Porto across the water.

Gaia is best known for its historic Port wine cellars, where the wine has been stored and aged for centuries. The city is linked to Porto by the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, one of the best places to enjoy sweeping views over the Douro and the riverside districts.

Beyond the riverfront, Gaia opens onto a long Atlantic coastline with beaches such as Madalena, Miramar and Granja. Other highlights include the Monastery of Serra do Pilar and the picturesque Chapel of Senhor da Pedra, set beside the sea.

With its blend of wine heritage, history, beaches and memorable landscapes, Vila Nova de Gaia is one of northern Portugal's most rewarding destinations.
