Vale de Gaios Walkway

The Vale de Gaios Walkway, also known as the Trilho dos Gaios Walkways, is one of the most enchanting hiking trails in the Coimbra region, right where Beira Alta meets Beira Litoral. Located in the municipality of Tábua, parish of Midões, the route follows the banks of the surprising Cavalos River, a wild tributary of the Mondego that winds through a lush, green valley straight out of a fairy tale.

Reopened in June 2023 with brand-new colourful walkways built across the trail's most demanding sections, this route lets you safely explore one of the best-preserved valleys in central Portugal — a real gem still largely undiscovered by the wider public.

The Trail

The full Trilho dos Gaios (PR4 de Tábua) is a linear trail of around 17 km, linking the historic centre of Tábua to the village of Vila Nova de Oliveirinha — a demanding route best suited to experienced hikers. However, the prettiest section — the walkways themselves — is just 3 km long (6 km round trip) and rated easy, ideal for families, even with young children.

  • Start/End: Vale de Gaios River Beach / Sumes Roman Bridge
  • Distance (walkways): about 3 km (6 km round trip)
  • Type: Linear (not circular)
  • Technical difficulty: Easy
  • Ticket: free entry
  • Best time to visit: All year round

What You'll Find

The path unfolds mostly in the shade of a dense oak forest, where the Cavalos River hides between huge granite boulders draped in moss. At times the water vanishes entirely and only the sound of it flowing gives it away; elsewhere it reveals itself in waterfalls and crystal-clear pools, some of which once powered the old watermills whose ruins still recall a nearly lost craft.

The colourful walkways appear at key points along the route, overcoming the most demanding sections without imposing a heavy visual footprint on the landscape. Along the way you'll find tables, benches and lovely picnic spots surrounded by nature, and in summer you can cool off with a swim at the small Vale de Gaios River Beach, where there's also a bar for drinks and snacks.

Extending the Walk

The walkways end next to the ancient Sumes Roman Bridge, but it's well worth continuing up to the hilltop village of São Geraldo. The climb is steep, but the panoramic views over the Gaios Valley more than reward the effort. Along the way you can also visit the curious Bica das Águas Sulfurosas, a natural spring known for the therapeutic properties of its waters.

When to Visit

The walkways can be enjoyed in any season:

  • Spring: mild weather and the Cavalos River waterfalls in full force
  • Summer: perfect for combining the hike with a swim in the river beach and the pools — expect more visitors on weekends
  • Autumn: the oak forest turns into a canvas of yellows, oranges and reds
  • Winter: slippery surfaces and the risk of flooded sections along the Cavalos River — check conditions before heading out

What to Bring

  • Proper hiking footwear
  • A light, comfortable backpack
  • Food and drink for a picnic
  • Swimwear and a towel for warmer days
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • A camera or smartphone to capture the route
  • A bag to take your rubbish back with you

Practical Information

  • Access: entrance next to the river beach in the village of Vale de Gaios
  • Parking: a handful of spots near the village entrance, which may fill up on summer weekends
  • Signage: the trail is well marked throughout
  • Accessibility: not recommended for people with reduced mobility

Getting There

Vale de Gaios is about 45 minutes from Coimbra and roughly 1h30 from Serra da Estrela, making it an ideal excuse for a getaway through the Beira region. From the A25 motorway, head towards Tábua and then the parish of Midões, where you'll find signs to the village.

Conclusion

The Vale de Gaios Walkway is an invitation to slow down and lose yourself in peaceful nature, far from the crowds of Portugal's busier destinations. Between waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, oak forests and colourful walkways, this Tábua trail is one of the best picks in central Portugal for a family hike, a riverside picnic or simply a deep breath in the heart of the Gaios Valley.
