The Trafaria (5th Battery) military complex was composed of the Trafaria Fort, next to the Tagus River, the Raposeira redoubt equipped with three Krupp pieces of 150 mm short- and medium-range for close defence and the Alpena redoubt, both installed on the hill of São João da Caparica, connected by a military road.

This military complex was designed to protect the interior of the Tagus bar and the entry of the Lisbon maritime port (Raposeira redoubt), and the Atlantic front contiguous to the south zone of the bar entrance (Alpena redoubt).
