In Sintra (Santa Maria e São Miguel, São Martinho e São Pedro de Penaferrim)
Perched dramatically above Sintra, the Castelo dos Mouros offers a truly unique glimpse into Portugal’s rich past. Constructed between the 8th and 9th centuries by the Moors, this formidable fortress served as a vital strategic point and a testament to their architectural prowess. It’s a remarkably well-preserved site, allowing visitors to wander along the ancient ramparts and imagine life during the medieval era. Walking the perimeter provides a fantastic perspective and a tangible connection to centuries gone by – you can almost feel the echoes of history.
Located a short stroll from the stunning Pena Palace, the castle offers a welcome respite from the crowds, presenting a more intimate and historically focused experience. While there are a fair number of steps to climb, the panoramic views overlooking Sintra and the surrounding landscape are genuinely breathtaking. Recent reviews highlight both the beauty of the location and the challenges – some visitors have noted the parking situation can be chaotic and the lack of readily available maps. However, the majority agree that the experience is well worth the effort, particularly for those seeking a quieter, more authentic encounter with Portugal’s Moorish heritage.
Access is easily arranged by utilising public transport – the nearest bus stop is a short walk away. Consider taking an “autocarro” (bus) from Sintra town. Many visitors combine a visit with the Pena Palace, making it a convenient and rewarding addition to any Sintra itinerary. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the castle involves a considerable amount of walking!

So beautiful. Went with my 9 years old daughter and 12 years old son, neither like hiking. At first they grumbled but after about 2 minutes they excitedly were pointing things out, running ahead. It was breathtaking and one of our best days in Portugal. Another highlight were the cats walking around li ing their best lives.
Too expensive. Not maps around, no signs, missing railbars on the stairs, a bit dangerous for crazy kids... The parking it's a mess don't bring your car. 5 euros to go the Uber only bring you down.
Bela recordação da visita que fiz em agosto/2018. Este castelo está impregnado de história do passado e ainda marca memórias do presente.
Beautiful walk in an ancient Moros castle
Lovely walk up to the castle, fun to walk around on the walls, beautiful views. Interpretive signs were informative.
It’s a bit of hiking. I’d highly recommend this. It was the most underrated castle and the least “touristy”.
Lots of steps but the views are incredible. Highly recommend, and just a 5 minute walk from Pena Palace.
