The Church of the Venerable Third Order of Carmo (Lisbon)
The Venerable Third Order of Carmel has its Temple in the old city of Lisbon located in the Largo do Carmo. Hidden in a noble palace, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Mount of Carmel is an eighteenth-century religious architecture with a single nave, the Chapel-Mor, and two altars in the place of the transept.
In the vestry, the wooden ceiling is painted with the coat of arms of the order. Crossing a long corridor full of tiles from the Pombaline period, it is possible to visit the Shrine of the Lord of Afflictions, with a great variety of realistic statues and images.
This building was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake at the expense of donations from the faithful, being inaugurated in 1789. Formerly its Triumph Procession, better known as the "Procession of the Naked Saints" was celebrated on Palm Sunday and was very crowded. Today this procession is not carried out, however, it is still possible to appreciate and admire the Temple of the Venerable Third Order of Carmel, located in an ideal location for those who want to have a great view of the city and is accessible by car.
