Small Lagoon of Arrimal (Santarém)
Little Pond is a natural form of rainwater storage. It is a small depression whose bottom is impermeable with clays and other sediments. Traditionally, it is used by the populations of Arrimal, Arrabal, Mendiga and Alqueidão, for drinking trough for cattle, irrigation and domestic uses. At times of the year without precipitation, it is possible to observe a green mantle of water lentil (Lemna minor), covering the water mirror of the lake, sign of the excessive presence of organic matter in these waters. On the margins, the tabúa, by the size and appearance of the cigar of its flowers, evidences a whole set of plants characteristic of wet zones. The green frog, the yellow-spotted salamander, the water viper snake, the water chicken and the small diving bird are the most common species in the lake. In fact, the fact of storing water almost all year round makes it important for amphibians, since they depend on areas with water, mainly for their larval development.
