Set on the slopes above the Alto Rabagão reservoir, near the village of Morgade in the municipality of Montalegre, the Baloiço de São Domingos is a scenic viewpoint that captures the quiet beauty of the Barroso region. Built in rustic wood and naturally framed by the surrounding hills, the swing offers a wide panorama over the reservoir, the valley and the mountain landscape that defines this part of northern Portugal.
The experience is simple but memorable: sitting on the swing, visitors feel almost suspended above the water and open countryside, with colours shifting between deep blues, greens and golden tones depending on the season and light. Sunrise and sunset are especially atmospheric, when the landscape softens and the peaceful character of the area becomes even more noticeable. It is also a popular spot for photography, but its greatest appeal lies in the sense of stillness and space.
Access requires some care, as signposting can be limited and not all routes suggested by navigation apps are suitable for conventional cars. There is a dirt-road access from the main road that may be manageable for light vehicles in good conditions, but visitors should choose the route carefully, drive cautiously and avoid rougher tracks. The viewpoint is worth including in a wider visit to Montalegre, the Alto Rabagão area and the cultural landscapes of Barroso.
