Chapel of Santa Catarina in Viana do Castelo
Located at Largo de Santa Catarina 40, 4900-351 Viana do Castelo, the Chapel of Santa Catarina is a small but charming jewel of sacred art. Although small in size, this chapel symbolizes humility and beauty, being deeply linked to the region's fishing community.
A rich and eventful history
Built in the 17th century in the area in Ribeira de Viana do Castelo, this chapel has a history full of events and changes. Originally, it was located in Castelo da Barra, close to Torre da Roqueta. However, due to difficult access for fishermen to the chapel and the expansion of the fortress, it was necessary to change its location. This movement was authorized by Philip III of Spain, with a view to providing easier access for the fishing community.
Notable Features
Just 50 meters from the fishermen's pier, the Chapel of Santa Catarina is a living testimony to the faith and maritime life of the region. Its interior houses several wax "ex-votos" and miniature sailing boats, reflecting the gratitude and requests of fishermen over the years. All its aesthetics and decoration make it a recommended monument for all who visit Viana do Castelo.
Forte Santiago da Barra: a historic neighbor
Very close to the Chapel of Santa Catarina you will find Fort Santiago da Barra. Located on the seafront, it is believed that the first fortification in this location dates back to the reign of D. Afonso III, in the 13th century. Manueline architectural elements, such as the “Torre da Roqueta”, suggest expansions during the reign of D. Manuel I in the 16th century. Later, under the Spanish domination of Philip II (or Philip I of Portugal), the fortress underwent significant renovations, assuming the polygonal plan that we know today, designed by Filippo de Terzi, a renowned designer of military buildings at the time. This heritage complex, made up of the Santa Catarina Chapel and the Santiago da Barra Fort, makes Viana do Castelo an unmissable destination for all lovers of history, art and culture.
