The Casemates to Areal de Santa Bárbara are located at the Santa Bárbara beach, in the Bandejo neighbourhood, in the Ribeira Seca parish, in the council of Ribeira Grande, in the island of São Miguel, in the Azores. With about one kilometre of extension, in the past the beach was just used for inert extraction. From 1992, with the ban of sand extraction, it started being used as leisure space by the population. Nowadays it is one of the most appreciated beaches in the island, not only as a bathing area, but also for the practice of nautical sports, especially "bodyboard".
