Santa Ana Chapel (São Roque do Pico)
The Ermida de Santa Ana, located on the coastal slope of the Island of Pico, is a place of great beauty and historical importance. Located in Santa Ana, just over a kilometer west of the parish of Santo António, the temple puts us in front of its origins in the 16th century. The origin of the Ermida de Santa Ana de Ericeira was given every year to fill a request for construction in the year 1616 and although it was authorized its construction in 1636, it was necessary to sign a maintenance deed for the donation of the properties.
According to tradition, Diogo Soares made a vow to dedicate the hermitage to Sant'Ana. Over the years, the hermitage has been profoundly altered, being that today only the main chapel remains. It is a beautiful temple, of Azorean architecture, which brings together three main altars inside.
The central altar contains an image of Santa Ana, flanked by other images of São Joaquim, Our Lady of Fátima, Saint Teresinha do Menino Jesus and São João de Brito. The side altars are dedicated to the Heart of Jesus, and to Our Lady of Conceição, respectively.
In addition to its external and internal beauty, there are other characteristics of this hermitage that make it unique. This hermitage is well suited for cars and there are also beautiful views of the sea and the rest of the village. Therefore, it is the ideal place to take refuge in a calm prayer throughout the day.
The Festa da Ermida de Santa Ana is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of July and is also the reason for the annual meetings. It is a great devotion and gathering event, to which many pilgrims travel from all over the island during the previous week.
The Ermida de Santa Ana is certainly a unique place, with historical origins tracing back.
