In Bragança
The Church of São Vicente, located at R. Combatentes da Grande Guerra 8, 5300-252 Bragança, is of Romanesque style and was built in the 13th century. Several important figures of Portuguese history are represented in it. It has survived various restorations, the last one being done in the 17th century, when the church was completely rebuilt due to a partial collapse. On its façade, there is a tile panel that transports us to the memory of Napoleon’s army and their fight against General Sepúlveda in 1808. Inside, the decoration corresponds to the 17th and 18th centuries, and has polychromed elements proper of the Baroque style. Here, one can find the main chapel with a crucified Christ between six Solomonic columns and, in each side, two figures, one of the Virgin and the other of São Vicente. Legend has it that the church was the setting for the secret wedding of D. Pedro I and the noble Galician lady Inês de Castro, against the will of his father, King Afonso IV. Upon discovering the relationship between them, the king ordered the execution of Inês, provoking the rebellion of his son. Located in the center of Bragança, this magnificent Romanesque and Baroque church is easily accessible and definitely worth a visit to revive its own memories from Portuguese history.
