The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, founded in 1153 by order of King Afonso Henriques, is one of the greatest jewels of Portuguese heritage and one of the most remarkable examples of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Europe. Built by monks of the Cistercian Order, the monastery stands out for its monumental simplicity, pure lines, and the imposing abbey church—the largest Gothic church in Portugal. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the monastic complex holds centuries of history, including the legendary tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, which immortalize one of the most significant love stories in Portuguese culture. The cloisters, dormitories, refectories, and other spaces reveal the austere and methodical life of the monks, while also showing the economic, agricultural, and cultural importance that the monastery held in the region for centuries. Today, Alcobaça continues to be a place of contemplation, beauty, and memory, where each stone tells a part of Portugal's history.
