Fluvial Beach of Ponte de Tregosa: A Refuge by the Centennial Bridge

Located in the charming parish of Tregosa, in the municipality of Barcelos, there is a natural treasure that combines history, beauty, and tranquility. The Fluvial Beach of Ponte de Tregosa is a place of rare serenity, where nature and architecture come together to create a unique experience.

The History of Tregosa: Between Names and Roots

Tregosa, also known in the past as Trebousa, Tragosa, and even Torgoosa, holds in its past designations the traces of its rich history. It is believed that the name "Torgoosa" is related to "torgo," a root that resembles a kind of heather. The parish appears in inscriptions since 1220 with the name "De Sancta Maria de Torgoosa," being an integral part of the Terra de Neiva.

A Landscape Painted by the Neiva River

Tregosa is situated in the orographic basin of the Neiva River, which winds through the region, bathing it with its clear and serene waters. The parish is divided between the plain and the north and northeast slope of Mount Arefe, giving it a diversified and captivating landscape. Two noteworthy points are the two bridges over the river: the old one, rebuilt in 1905, and the recent one, built for the road from Barroselas to Durrães. The Ponte de Tregosa is also a heraldic symbol of the parish.

A Journey Through History and Religion

In addition to natural beauty, Tregosa offers visitors an opportunity to explore its past. The Sanctuary of Calvary, dating back to the 16th century, is a religious and architectural landmark that deserves to be discovered. The construction is preceded by a series of crosses along an extensive stairway, forming a Calvary that leads to the serenity of the sanctuary.

An Encounter with the Past and Nature

The Fluvial Beach of Ponte de Tregosa, situated in a picturesque setting of a parish rooted in history, is an invitation for those seeking a tranquil getaway. Whether to relax by the riverbank, explore the remnants of the past, or enjoy natural beauty, this location offers a complete and authentic experience.

Although Tregosa was extinguished as a parish in 2013, its heritage and charm endure. As part of the Union of the Parishes of Durrães and Tregosa, this region continues to receive visitors in search of a connection between history, nature, and serenity.
