In Vila Nova de Gaia
Areinho River Beach, in Oliveira do Douro, is one of Vila Nova de Gaia's most pleasant riverside spots. Set at Alameda do Areinho, 340, 4430-314 Vila Nova de Gaia, only a short trip from Porto, it combines a sandy riverbank on the Douro with views of the bridges, passing trains and boats moving along the river.
The area gained new life after the "Encostas do Douro" redevelopment project and is often described as the last Douro beach before the river reaches the sea. Its wide sandy area attracts swimmers, families and groups looking for a free place to relax, sunbathe, picnic or spend a few hours outdoors. Free parking is available nearby, along with some shaded areas, although arriving early is wise on busier summer days.
During the bathing season, Areinho has seasonal facilities such as changing rooms and lifeguard supervision. The summer offer was strengthened with Piscina do Areinho, a temporary, free heated pool installed right beside the Douro as part of Gaia's new summer structures for its riverside sandbanks. Inaugurated on 23 July 2026, the pool is about 40 x 50 metres, 1 metre deep and has capacity for 80 people per session, with use limited to 30 minutes per person.
The pool was designed with universal accessibility in mind and gives priority to people with disabilities, children under two and visitors aged over 65. It is a useful alternative for anyone who wants to enjoy the riverside setting with warmer water than the Douro, which can still feel cold in summer.
The setting is relaxed, but it is worth planning with realistic expectations. The river water can vary in quality, windy days are common, and some access points or wooden walkways may feel less well maintained than the location deserves. Parking can also slow local traffic when the area is crowded. Even so, for a river beach close to Porto, with open space, Douro views and a free pool option in season, Areinho is a practical choice for a summer morning or afternoon.
Before visiting, check the current rules and opening times. The latest notes indicated daily pool hours from 9:30 to 19:30, subject to the applicable regulations.

Vila Nova de Gaia, commonly known as Gaia, is a city in northern Portugal on the southern bank of the Douro River, facing Porto across the water.
Gaia is best known for its historic Port wine cellars, where the wine has been stored and aged for centuries. The city is linked to Porto by the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, one of the best places to enjoy sweeping views over the Douro and the riverside districts.

Popped down to the river beach. Water didn’t look appealing. Homeless people living at back of beach Sand is a bit gritty. Seems a good spot to sunbath, thats about it. Locals all seemed happy enough. Not one for the tourist. Cafe nearby was ok. Simple but nice. This is the only toilet available.
I visited the beach for the first time on July, 2022 because of Bifanas festival. The beach is easy to be reached by Google Maps. Pros: 1. Parking accessible for wheelchair. 2. Entrance accessible for wheelchair. 3. You can visit the river beach for free. 4. The parking area is free. 5. The river beach has white sand to lay down and enjoy the view. 6. There is a toilet in the beach. Cons: 1. The toilet needs to be improved in terms of cleanliness.
Don’t go there. Especially on weekend. Difficult to come by narrow local roads, lots of traffic, too many cars, nowhere to park, you’ll get fine for wrong parking quickly. Too many people as well, dirty.
New fave hotspot when it comes to "let's go to the beach" subject. Very private and not that windy. The sand is not soft, so carry some kinda of stuff to stay over it. The water is colder than the sea. There's a restaurant near the place I was :)
We walked there- not sure if I’d reccomend walking. But there’s a lot of spots in the shade, people are polite, the beach isn’t the cleanest and it’s pretty busy but it’s good.
