The Ribeira das Quelhas Walkways are one of the most impressive nature trails in the Serra da Lousa. Located near Coentral, in Castanheira de Pera, they follow the Ribeira das Quelhas through a landscape shaped by rocky cliffs, small waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and abundant vegetation.
Before the walkways were built, this was a difficult area to access, mostly reserved for experienced hikers or canyoning enthusiasts. Today, the route makes it much easier to discover this wild valley without losing the feeling of direct contact with nature.
Despite its short length, around 1.2 km each way, the walk should not be underestimated. The main challenge is a long staircase with a steep incline and little shade, especially demanding on hotter days. Even so, the effort is more than rewarded by the beauty of the surroundings and the peace of the place.
It is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a short but memorable escape, with dramatic scenery and inviting spots to pause by the water in the warmer months.
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, when the stream has a stronger flow and temperatures make the walk more comfortable. In summer, the natural pools become especially appealing, although the heat can make the route more demanding.
The Ribeira das Quelhas Walkways are one of the most surprising natural attractions in central Portugal, ideal for anyone who values waterfalls, mountain landscapes, and short trails with a big visual reward.
