The Reserva Nacional Pacaya Samiria, often referred to as the “mirrored forest,” offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of Peru. During the wet season, the vast expanse of this reserve – covering over 20,000 square kilometers, an area larger than 7,700 square miles – transforms dramatically. Floodwaters rise, creating a breathtaking reflection of the dense canopy above, turning the surface of the water into a shimmering, almost surreal landscape.
This remarkable ecosystem is a vital reservoir of biodiversity, sheltering a remarkable array of species uniquely adapted to the cyclical flooding. Fish, including the iconic pink river dolphins, exploit these seasonal shifts, utilizing submerged channels to access new feeding grounds. Researchers actively study the reserve, examining everything from the intricate water chemistry to the complex migration patterns, providing invaluable insights into how flooded ecosystems respond to changing climatic conditions. Local communities, with generations of knowledge passed down, skillfully navigate the ever-shifting waterways – routes that vanish with the rains and reappear as navigable corridors as the water levels recede.
Visiting Pacaya Samiria requires a commitment to adventure and an appreciation for the raw beauty of nature. While access can be challenging, the rewards are immense. Recent visitor feedback consistently highlights the incredible sunsets, the immersive experience of connecting with the surrounding jungle, and the exceptional guidance provided by local tour operators. It’s a place where the natural world reigns supreme, offering a chance to witness a truly extraordinary corner of the Amazon rainforest.

Hard to get to, but amazing!
Best part of our trip to Peru. We had a blast. I wish we could have stayed there for at least 2 weeks. We had superb guides. The first night we had an intense rain so we had to improvise some camping and honestly it was the best part - scary too lol.
