Quinta de La Rosa: A Unique Wine Tourism Experience in Portugal
Quinta de La Rosa, located in the picturesque region of Gouvães do Douro, Sabrosa, Portugal, is an unforgettable wine tourism destination. This historic property, dating back to 1906, is a landmark in the production of Porto and Douro wines. The winery, built on a hillside along the Douro River, reveals steep stairs that connect different levels, where wine is produced for the most important restaurants and retailers in the world.
Renovation and Innovation in Wine Production
The winery at Quinta de La Rosa underwent a complete overhaul between 2011 and 2012. This project, planned for approximately 7 years, resulted in a new winery that leverages gravity in the winemaking process. The estate boasts temperature-controlled granite lagares and an automated press. Collaboration with Quinta das Banderias in Sabrosa expanded their capabilities, including a bottling line and additional fermentation tanks.
Tradition and Modernity in Viticulture
The vineyard of Quinta de La Rosa stretches along the banks of the Douro River and rises to an altitude of 400 meters. There are 11 separate vineyards, which provide a unique diversity for wine production. Tradition is maintained with foot treading in all ports, while some Reserve table wines also undergo cold maceration before fermentation.
A Rich History of Challenges and Successes
Quinta de La Rosa has a rich history filled with challenges, including World War II and significant family changes. Under the management of Sophia and her father Tim, the estate not only maintained its reputation in the production of Porto wines but also expanded to table wines in the 90s. The introduction of Ports with their own label in 1988 was a significant milestone in this journey.
Wine Tourism Experiences at the Estate
Beyond renowned wine production, Quinta de La Rosa offers a complete wine tourism experience. The Cozinha da Clara restaurant, opened in 2017, pays homage to Sophia's grandmother and is known for its Portuguese cuisine with local products. Guided tours of the winery, olive oil and vinegar tastings, vineyard walks, and outdoor activities are just some of the experiences that visitors can enjoy.
Lodging with a View of the Douro
With the expansion in tourism, Quinta de La Rosa now offers lodging, featuring 27 rooms that provide stunning views of the Douro River. This development reflects the estate's commitment to providing a complete and authentic experience to its visitors.
Exploring the Municipality of Sabrosa
Beyond Quinta de La Rosa, the Municipality of Sabrosa offers several attractions for visitors. The region is rich in history and culture, with various historical and natural sites of interest. Nature lovers can explore the trails and landscapes of the Douro, while history enthusiasts can visit the various monuments and museums that portray the rich cultural heritage of the area.
