Pico Island Porto Santo Fort (Porto Santo)
The Fort of Pico, also referred to as the Castle of Pico, was located in the parish and municipality of Porto Santo, on the island of Porto Santo, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Due to the successive attacks of Barbary and other pirates on the island of Porto Santo, of which the one in 1619 stands out, in which almost the entire population perished or was enslaved, except for only 18 men and 7 women, Philip III of Spain sought to repopulate the island, determining the construction of a fortification for the protection of the people. The chosen location was the rocky peak that dominates Vila Baleira, determining to build, under its walls, houses of residence, warehouses and a cistern, arming it.
