Parish Church of São Mateus (Madalena), located in the homonymous parish, in the municipality of Madalena, is situated at the top of the island of Pico, close to the sea. The church of São Mateus is known for its majestic style and for its precious historical pieces. Elevated to the category of Diocesan Sanctuary in 1962, the church stands out for its three naves sustained by heavy pilasters and for a detailed oil painting representing an apostle on each one of them. The ceiling of the main chapel is also painted in fresco. One of the great highlights of the Church of São Mateus is the Ecce Homo image, which was offered in 1862. This image is of great artistic value and its great festival takes place on August 6th. As part of the tradition, the parish continues to offer cakes to the pilgrims who travel there to revere the Orator of the church.
