Palácio da Bolsa (Porto)

Palácio da Bolsa is one of Porto’s most remarkable monuments, a 19th-century neoclassical palace built to reflect the city’s importance as a commercial gateway to Portugal. Located on Rua de Ferreira Borges, close to the historic Ribeira area, it offers a fascinating insight into Porto’s mercantile past and the ambition of the Associação Comercial do Porto, which still occupies the building today.

Visits are by guided tour only, and this is part of what makes the experience so rewarding. In around 30 minutes, guides lead visitors through richly decorated rooms such as the Hall of Nations, crowned by an elegant iron-and-glass dome, the Commercial Court Room, the Golden Room and the General Assembly Room, where impressive decorative effects reveal the craftsmanship and innovation of the period.

The highlight for many visitors is the Arabian Room, an extraordinary Moorish Revival hall inspired by the Alhambra, with intricate geometric patterns, vivid colours and ornate details designed to impress international delegations. Tours are available in different languages and can fill up, so booking in advance is recommended.
