Paiva Walkways
The Paiva Walkways are one of Portugal's most famous hiking trails and one of the most awarded experiences in the country's nature tourism scene. Located in the municipality of Arouca, district of Aveiro, they run along the left bank of the Paiva River, between the Areinho and Espiunca river beaches, crossing a territory recognised by UNESCO as the Arouca Geopark.
Opened in 2015, the walkways quickly became an icon of ecotourism, winning international awards and attracting visitors from all over the world, drawn by the almost untouched beauty of this natural sanctuary roughly an hour from Porto.
The Trail
Stretching for about 8.7 km, the path combines wooden walkways, dirt sections and staircases that can be demanding in places. It is rated as a moderate to hard route, with steep gradients, and the average walking time is 2h30 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and stops.

What You'll Find
The trail closely follows the Paiva River, known for its crystal-clear waters and whitewater rapids that attract canoeists and rafters. Along the way you'll discover dramatic gorges, wild vegetation and unique geological formations, including quartz crystals and other geosites of great scientific value.
Biodiversity is another big draw: there are rare species of fauna and flora, some of them endangered across Europe. Throughout the route you'll come across resting spots and beautiful river beaches, such as Praia do Vau, perfect for a refreshing dip on warmer days.
The 516 Arouca Bridge
Right next to the walkways stands the 516 Arouca Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world, at around 516 metres long. Crossing it is an optional but unforgettable experience, offering dizzying views over the Paiva valley and the Aguieiras waterfall.

Arouca Geopark: UNESCO Geological Heritage
The walkways are just the gateway to the Arouca Geopark, a vast territory recognised by UNESCO for its exceptional geological value. Here you can discover the famous Pedras Parideiras of Castanheira, a phenomenon unique in the world, and the Canelas Trilobites, among the largest ever found.
What to Visit in Arouca
Beyond the walkways, the municipality has plenty to explore. The Arouca Monastery, medieval in origin and linked to Queen Santa Mafalda, is a must-see for lovers of religious heritage. The town is also known for its Arouquesa Beef, a local delicacy with Protected Designation of Origin, and for its traditional cuisine, well worth a stop at the end of a day on the trail.
Getting There
Arouca is around 1 hour from Porto (A32/A4) and roughly 2h30 from Lisbon (A1). Access to the walkways is via the Areinho (south) or Espiunca (north) entrances, both clearly signposted.
