Our Lady of Truths Chapel (Porto)
The Chapel of Our Lady of Truths, located at R. de Dom Hugo in Porto, is a Mannerist feature, dated from the last quarter of the seventeenth century. Its altarpiece, from the early eighteenth century, is an example of transition between Mannerist language and the affirmation of the National style in the city.
The chapel is located in the Historic Center of Porto, World Heritage of Humanity. It is accessible by car, offering beautiful views of the city. At the initiative of the confraternity of Our Lady of the Postigo das Verdades, it was built in 1697.
The Mannerist architecture of the chapel is evident: transition between Renaissance and Baroque. Its altarpiece points to a National style that stands out for its twisted columns and Eucharistic symbols, vine leaves, bunches of grapes, phoenixes and naked boys. The image of Our Lady of Truths, made of Ançã stone and attributed to the Coimbra workshops, completes the atmosphere of inspiration and reverence.
Next to the chapel, is the Postigo das Mentiras, where originally this image of Our Lady of Truths was located. Visiting the Chapel of Our Lady of Truths, and immersing yourself in its long history, is an opportunity not to be missed, as it offers beautiful views and much inspiration.
