The Church of Our Lady of Pena, also known as the Church of Fontinhas, is a magnificent structure located at EN4-2 120, 9760-211 Fontinhas, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, Portugal. This church is dedicated to Our Lady of Pena, considered the protector of all those who visit her.
Fontinhas: A Parish Rich in History
Fontinhas, the parish where the Church is located, covers an area of 17.09 km² and has a population of 1,594 inhabitants, according to the 2011 census. Its population density is 93.3 inhabitants/km². The name of the locality comes from the abundance of small springs in the area. Located at the foot of the dismantled Serra do Cume Complex, it is known for the fertility of its lands and the predominance of agriculture, services, commerce, and civil construction. Fontinhas was the birthplace of Commander José Vieira Goulart, an important benefactor in the municipality of Praia da Vitória.
Cultural and Religious Heritage
In addition to the parish church, Fontinhas is home to the Hermitage of Santo António, built in the early 16th century by Fr. Francisco Cardoso Leal. This hermitage, located about 700m from the center of the parish, has served as a parish church and houses beautiful images inside, including Santo António, Santo Amaro, Santa Cecília, Santa Luzia, and Our Lady of Fátima. Another highlight is the Empire of the Holy Spirit, built at the end of the 19th century and remodeled in 1977.
