Our Lady of Help Church (São Roque do Pico)
The Church of Our Lady of Help is located in the parish of Prainha, in the place of Prainha de Baixo, municipality of São Roque do Pico, island of Pico, Azores, Portugal. This 18th century church is located in the Dr. José Machado Serpa Square, known as the Imperial Square. The Church of Our Lady of Help has a plan in the form of a false Latin cross, whose main façade is flanked by two bell towers. The body of the temple is composed of a main nave and two smaller lateral corridors, separated from the main nave by five volute arches. Each of the lateral corridors has two rectangular windows, an arched verger window and three doors. The tops of the naves house the headboard that holds the main altar. This area of the church has two windows on each side and a circular oculus. The church ceiling is made of wood and the walls are covered with stucco and whitewashed, with balconies, moldings, arches and pillars in stone in view, as well as a high choir. The Church of Our Lady of Help can be easily accessed by car, taking advantage also of the extraordinary view to the sea and to the village.
