Our Lady of Ó Chapel (Porto)

Address
Largo do Terreiro 9, 4050-029 Porto

The Chapel of Our Lady of Ó, located at Largo do Terreiro 9, in the municipality of Porto, was built in the 16th century but was rebuilt in the 18th century. Initially, the patron saint of the chapel was Our Lady of Piety.

According to various authors, the change to the current invocation begins in 1821, when the image of Our Lady was transferred to the Chapel, after the demolition of the wall where it was. This, due to Liberal struggles, was destroyed, forcing its remodeling.

What stands out most inside the Chapel of Our Lady of Ó is the beautiful inlaid altarpiece from the beginning of the 18th century, by João da Costa. Enjoying a privileged location, it is in the center of the city, with a view to the ribeirinha and the Casa do Infante, Ribeira Square, S. Francisco, S. Nicolau church and the Ferreira Borges market.

The spectacular image of Our Lady of Ó is located to the right of the main altar, while the oldest altarpiece by João da Costa is, without a doubt, the highlight of this wonderful chapel.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Ó is a tourist attraction with a phenomenal view to the city and a lot of history to tell. You can get there by car and you will be welcomed with a unique setting. Take some time for a visit!
