Perched dramatically atop the Sintra mountains, the Pena Palace is a truly unforgettable sight – and one of Portugal’s Seven Wonders. Completed in 1854, this vibrant castle offers a feast for the eyes, with its striking red and yellow hues contrasting beautifully against the lush green landscape. It’s a place that genuinely feels a little bit magical.

Getting to the palace is an adventure in itself. You can easily take a taxi up the winding road, or, for a more rewarding experience, embark on a scenic hike from the town of Sintra. The trail itself meanders through beautiful gardens, offering glimpses of the palace as you ascend – a fantastic way to appreciate the surrounding beauty. Be aware that the palace is incredibly popular, particularly during peak season like August, so arriving early, right when it opens, is highly recommended to avoid the biggest crowds.

While exploring the palace’s opulent interiors and stunning architecture, you’ll discover a fascinating blend of architectural styles. Visitors often appreciate the eclectic mix of Romantic, Moorish, and Manueline influences. Consider purchasing a park entrance ticket alone if you’re primarily interested in admiring the exterior – it’s a spectacular view! Many visitors find that booking tickets online in advance, particularly through a queue, secures a time slot, allowing you to comfortably explore the grounds and potentially visit other areas of the expansive park. Don’t forget to check for any discounts available with a Lisbon Card.

If you buy tickets in the queue online (recommended) you may be given a time slot for an hour or so in advance. This normally means you need to spend time visiting other parts of the park. Top Tip: you can use the restaurant to access the outside of the building without having to wait for your time slot
