Miranda do Corvo Castle (Miranda do Corvo)
Today, only a secondary tower, partially rebuilt and transformed into a bell tower, as well as a cistern, remain of the formerly existing castle.
It is believed that with the reconstruction of 1136, a more elementary fortification had given way to a sufficiently spacious structure to house a small military garrison, equipped with walls of masonry and towers to mark the angles of the perimeter.
If, isolated in the middle of the castle, there had been a manorial tower, characteristic of the Romanesque castle, it is something we still do not know for certain.
Nevertheless, the archaeological works carried out since June 2011 have allowed the identification of the foundations of a structure next to the cistern.
Curiously, these works brought new and important data about the use of the Caramito hill, where the castle stood: a set of more than 30 anthropomorphic tombs excavated in the rock, reveals that this space had been used as a necropolis for at least 900 years.
