Miradouro do Monte de Faro (Esposende), Portugal
At the top of Monte de Faro, we can view, to the west, the entire Atlantic coast between Póvoa de Varzim and Esposende. Right in front of the old town of Fão, Ofir and its petrified "horses", and the city of Esposende at the estuary of the Cávado river. On this southern end of the fossil beach, the rocky mass that characterizes the geography of the coastal strip is given the suggestive name of Monte do Faro. Here, according to medieval documentation - subtus mons Faro - there would have been a watchtower and a lighthouse or torch, with the mission to watch and transmit to inland areas, possibly to the Faria Castle, what was happening around the mouth of the Cávado at times of siege by hostile forces in the region.
