The Passadiços da Mata dos Medos, or "Fear Woods Boardwalks," are a treasure nestled within a botanical reserve that reflects the splendor of nature. Rich in history and legacy, these boardwalks are marked both by the majestic presence of stone pine trees planted by the order of King D. João V and by the grandeur of the fossil cliff that surrounds them.
The views provided by these boardwalks are truly magnificent, a result of the gradual retreat of the sea waters. The scenery is a spectacle for the eyes, a harmonious dance between land and sea unfolding before those who traverse them.
The Passadiços da Mata dos Medos embrace the beach with their unique presence. Carefully preserved within nature, they reveal breathtaking landscapes that stretch out to the infinite ocean. A parking area at your disposal makes the experience even more convenient, allowing visitors to park their cars and embark on the journey on foot.
As you journey along the path, it's comforting to find natural shelters provided by abundant shade. This makes it possible to enjoy the boardwalks even on the hottest summer days, ensuring a pleasant and relaxing stroll.
Being well-prepared for this adventure is essential. Don't forget to bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, sunscreen to take care of your skin, and a cap to protect yourself from the sun. These small measures ensure a more enjoyable and comfortable experience.
The Passadiços da Mata dos Medos are the ideal location for a rejuvenating walk through the woods. The viewpoints along the route offer stunning vistas of the vast sea, inviting visitors to appreciate the grandeur of nature.
This walk is suitable for all ages, making it an excellent choice for family bonding. The dense vegetation provides shade and freshness, making even the hot summer days inviting for this adventure. It's an experience that I highly recommend to everyone.
The Mata dos Medos stretches along a 5-kilometer coastal strip, embracing the sea and the lands of Almada and Sesimbra. This is a testament to its importance and influence on the surrounding landscape.
Located near Charneca de Caparica in the Setúbal District, the Mata dos Medos was planted by the order of King D. João V with a vital purpose: to prevent the dunes or "medos" (pronounced "médus") from advancing into the inner agricultural lands. It's a history that unfolds with each step on these enchanting boardwalks.

Great place for trekking/walking and enjoying nature! A lush forest and stunning views of the cliffs and the ocean. Lizards and birds can be seen. Both wooden walkways and regular trails available with the latter being mostly sandy, which can be tough to walk on. Flat terrain, no altitude changes. No bathrooms - adding them would be a great improvement.
Meander of walkways under construction at the end of the cliff known as the Protected Natural Area of the Fossil Cliff of Costa da Caparica. Crossed by excellent trails for extreme running that go up and down the cliffs. An exceptional view with viewpoints and a picnic area. great place to walk around in good weather
A very well maintained park with well groomed trails that include both natural and raised constructed paths. It is very family and stroller friendly. It offers some great nature experiences and specular views. There is free parking and a number of picnic tables.
Really lovely walk with brand new boardwalks, lots of birds and flowers and great views. I only wish that I had more time to explore the trails. No sign posts though so it's easy to get turned around.
Personal favourite of trails so far. The wooden path is wide, new, and makes it easy to enjoy the walk. Contrary to majority of trails in Portugal, this one is pretty much linear. We walked for about an hour; no exhaustion. Suited for anyone. The viewpoints of the beach are great as well. If there are no parking spaces, you can park at the start of Parque de Merendas da Tremoceira, like we did, and go through the park, until you see the wooden trail.
