Main Church of Águeda
The Main Church of Águeda, dedicated to Saint Eulalia, is one of the most emblematic and ancient monuments of the city. This place of worship dates back to the 17th century, although the first documentary references only appear in the 14th century, during the reign of King Dinis. During the 16th and 18th centuries, the church underwent significant restorations, remaining today as a testament to its long history.
Architecture and Art
Entering through the Archway Atrium, visitors are greeted by the sucupira door and led to the Internal Atrium, where the 15th-century Gothic sculpture of Saint Eulalia stands out. In the Main Nave, the imposing "Panel of Saint Eulalia", an 18th-century oil painting, dominates the space. The Main Chapel, in turn, houses images of great historical and artistic value, such as those of Saint Peter and Saint Eulalia, as well as the “Ceroferary Angels” in gilded wood.
Cultural Heritage
The Registry-Museum, consisting of three rooms, houses a rich collection of sacred art, including oil paintings, sculptures, and panels. Notable are the images of Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Dominic, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Anthony, Saint Joseph, and the Child. The Baptismal Chapel and the Mortuary Chapel, with their unique characteristics, complement the richness of this religious monument.
