According to Castelo de Paiva's Municipal Chamber website, the Island of Love was a cult site during the medieval period and had a chapel dedicated to St. Peter. The ruins of this chapel, built in the 15th century, were discovered during archaeological excavations in 1998. At the island's highest point, there are still remains of a medieval defensive tower, from which you can see three municipalities: Castelo de Paiva, Marco de Canaveses and Cinfães.
