Legenda craterului Tengger

Address
Area Gn. Bromo, Podokoyo, Tosari, Pasuruan Regency, East Java, Indonesia

The Tengger Crater, a mesmerizing spectacle nestled within the Tengger Massif in East Java, Indonesia, offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Rising to 2,329 meters, this volcanic caldera is far from the highest peak in the region, yet its dramatic beauty and ethereal landscape immediately captivate visitors. Imagine standing before a vast ‘Sea of Sand’, a protected nature reserve, with almost constant plumes of white smoke billowing against a backdrop that resembles the surface of the moon – a remarkably striking scene.

The area holds deep cultural significance for the Tengger people, who have inhabited the surrounding lands for centuries. They traditionally conduct annual ceremonies at the volcano, offering prayers and gifts to the Mountain Gods, a practice deeply rooted in their beliefs and history. Recent Google Maps reviews consistently highlight the area’s stunning visuals and the profound cultural connection felt by those who visit. While some travelers have raised concerns regarding animal welfare – it’s important to be mindful of the local practices and ensure responsible tourism.

Getting to the Tengger Crater typically involves a combination of transport – often starting with a journey to Mount Bromo itself, followed by a short drive or a more adventurous trek. The views are best experienced during sunrise, when the light transforms the landscape into a breathtaking panorama. If you're planning a trip, researching local tour operators and transportation options beforehand will greatly enhance your experience and allow you to fully appreciate the raw beauty and cultural richness of this remarkable location.

Visited in July 2022. Cool to see hundreds of classic Toyota Land Cruisers and ride into the crater in one. Tengger is the caldera you view into after crossing much sand (horse rides for rent) and climbing many many steps. Steam was venting, making a other-worldly sound. Gn Semeru is the more active larger volcano in the far distance, often venting (sometimes erupts). Was told forbidden to climb Gn Batok, which is the dramatic fluted cone in the basin because the soil is unstable. Sunrise wasn't dramatic since rose behind a hill where we were standing since 4 am. The crater floor is fogged in until ~9 am. Wear a jacket if you come before sunrise.

The horses are distressed and mistreated, lacking basic care. Fat and lazy tourists who sit on those poor horses should be ashamed of themselves. They are too small to carry so much weight!

The Tengger Caldera was once a very large volcano with a height of about 4572 meters above sea level, but this mountain then erupted repeatedly in a series of powerful and complex eruptions, so that in the end it left a giant caldera with smaller mountains, such as Bromo, Batok, Widodaren, Kursi, etc. that grew overlapping within the Tengger Caldera. Now this caldera only leaves the highest point of about 2770 meters above sea level which is now known as Mount Penanjakan.

A remnant caldera of a giant volcano, the ancient Mount Tengger. Had it not erupted, Java would have a giant mountain 4.5 kilometers high, far taller than Semeru, and its volcanic activity would be unimaginable.

Oh my God, it was so amazing to be there, and I couldn't get enough of it, wanting to stay longer at Bromo. It wasn't too cold, but it felt stifling. Nature had already given a signal, and it turned out that Semeru erupted at 3:00 PM. Subhanallah!! #Memories 04/12/2021
