Largo do Toural (Guimarães)
Largo do Toural in Guimarães
The Largo do Toural, located in the heart of Guimarães, is a must-visit attraction for those visiting this historic city, often referred to as the "cradle of the Portuguese nation". This vibrant and lively space is one of the main meeting and socialization points for both locals and tourists, offering a unique experience of immersion in Portuguese culture and history.
A Square Full of History
Located outside the walls of the city's castle, near the city gate, Largo do Toural was once the stage for cattle fairs and bullfights. Today, it has transformed into the heart of the city, where several cafés and patisseries are found, surrounded by a row of beautiful old houses on the east side, and to the west, the Basilica of São Pedro. This place, rich in history and culture, is an excellent starting point for exploring the heritage of Guimarães.
Events and Atmosphere
Described as cheerful and bright, especially during the Christmas season, Largo do Toural comes alive with Christmas lights, even on rainy days when few shops are open. There are plenty of photogenic elements following the holiday season, making it a fantastic and beautiful location to capture travel memories. It is, without a doubt, one of my favorite places for its excellent location and welcoming atmosphere.
Exploring Guimarães
Beyond Largo do Toural, Guimarães has much to offer. From the iconic Guimarães Castle, associated with the foundation of the Portuguese nation, to the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, with its collections of lordly art. The historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a journey back in time through medieval streets. The Citânia de Briteiros, a bit outside the city, is a fascinating archaeological site that offers a unique view of pre-Roman life in the region.
For nature and outdoor lovers, the Penha Sanctuary, accessible by a cable car, offers spectacular panoramic views over the city and leisure areas. The Platform of Arts and Creativity, a modern space dedicated to contemporary art, demonstrates the cultural dynamism of Guimarães.
