Lake Natron

Nestled in the northern reaches of Tanzania, Lake Natron presents a truly remarkable and somewhat surreal landscape. This expansive alkaline lake, coloured a striking deep red by the presence of cyanobacteria, is a place of intense beauty and surprising resilience. Its waters, boasting a pH level as high as 10.5, are incredibly caustic – a factor that naturally prevents the survival of most fish, but has instead fostered a thriving ecosystem uniquely adapted to these harsh conditions.

Lake Natron is particularly famous as the primary breeding ground for the Lesser Flamingos. These magnificent birds, seemingly defying the lake’s hostility, feed on the abundant algae that flourish in its waters. Nearby, the Oldoinyo Lengai volcano adds to the dramatic scenery, its rare carbonatite lava further shaping the surrounding terrain. Visitors can witness this extraordinary spectacle, though it’s important to note that the vibrant red hues are most prominent during the dry season.

Recent traveller reviews highlight a range of experiences, with some praising the unique beauty and otherworldly atmosphere, while others express disappointment regarding accessibility and the lake’s appearance. It’s crucial to be aware of the challenging access route, often involving a long drive on unpaved roads, and heed warnings regarding the lake's highly alkaline waters – it’s best to admire from a distance. For those seeking an encounter with a truly exceptional and unusual corner of the African continent, Lake Natron offers an unforgettable, albeit demanding, adventure.

Scenic place, false hospitality. My family travelled to Lake Natron without a guide, as we rented a self-drive safari car. Upon arrival, we were told that the lake and its surroundings can only be visited by paying for a guide, a weak service which cost us $20 per person. We were told this included entry and guidance around 3 sights, and the permit entries to these. Nonetheless, the guide only offered surface-level information and later announced that the permits (local and central entrance taxes) were ultimately not included in the price, and thus need to be paid on top to the authorities. This cost us an additional $35 per person, which made the one night we spent at the location for my family incredibly expensive for little experience. We left wondering whether it is only a few individuals acting as guides benefitting from tourism in the area, while the local community is left out of its benefits.

Amazing place! It was worth long driving. Totally different from other places in Tanzania.

cause of salts and a volcano, it became a red lake! This is why there's no fish. But flamingos will survive. And egyptians poured a bottle of Natron water to make a mummy.

I visited Lake Natron while climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai. What initially was a side trip during my Ol Doinyo Lengai climb became one of the highlights of the trip. It is a half-hour ride from the nearby Engoserai village. We hired motorbikes with locals and rode there. The road is sandy, and the bike tires kept slipping, so it's recommended to go in a four-wheeler. We saw wildlife such as zebras, monkeys, and giraffes on our way. The lake was unlike any other. It is one of the most dangerous lakes due to its high alkalinity, which makes it the perfect spot for flamingos. It was a treat for the eyes to visit the lake during sunset, watching thousands of pink flamingos with Ol Doinyo Lengai in the backdrop. A must-visit if you are in that region.

Why tourists visit: Pink flamingos, alkaline lake. Risks: Caustic water, extreme heat. Guides & Safety: Use local guides; avoid swimming in the lake. Wear protective clothing if trekking nearby. Cost Minimizing Tips: Combine with nearby safari tours; join group tours to split transport costs.
