"Lagoa do Fogo (Ponta Delgada) is one of the biggest lagoons of the Azores and the second biggest of the Island of São Miguel. It has been classified as a natural reserve since 1974 and is an integral part of the Natura 2000 Network, having been classified as a special conservation zone, approved by European Commision Decision on December 28, 2001, in accordance with the Habitats 92/43/CEE Council Directive. This bright blue lagon covers an area of 1,360 ha, which is quite impressive taking into consideration the size of the island itself."
