Nestled in the mountainous region of Nagano Prefecture, Jigoku Deani Monkey Park offers a truly unique and captivating experience. Initially established as a biological conservation area in the 1960s, this park has evolved into a remarkable natural laboratory, observing the fascinating behaviour of wild Japanese macaques – or snow monkeys – as they adapt to the harsh winter climate. It’s a place where science and nature intertwine, providing invaluable insights into evolution and ecology.
What makes this park so special is the monkeys’ reliance on the area’s natural hot springs. During the coldest months, when water sources freeze, they’ve been observed consuming snow to obtain hydration. The springs themselves create a stunning spectacle – steam freezes, forming a delicate, metallic-looking layer on the surrounding rock walls, particularly beautiful in the mornings during January and February. The journey to the main viewing point involves a pleasant, albeit somewhat lengthy, walk through deep snow, typically taking around 30 to 40 minutes, building anticipation for the incredible sight awaiting you.
Visitors consistently praise the park’s serene atmosphere and the opportunity to observe these resilient animals in their natural habitat. While some reviews mention a moderate walk, the reward – witnessing the monkeys’ ingenious survival strategies – is undeniably worth the effort. It’s a truly special place to connect with nature and appreciate the delicate balance of life in the Japanese Alps. Getting there usually involves using a local autocarro, and it’s advisable to arrive early to avoid larger crowds, especially during peak season.

How do you review your lifetime bucket list... This was beyond the Dream It was beyond my reality.... They are everything & more. The connection in my photos say it all
El camino para llegar a ver los monos simplemente hermoso, y los monos muy geniales, se te acercan y todo y salen sus buenas fotos en general
The way to the park is kind of tricky, I wouldn't call it a hike, but I'd 100% recommend being prepared for lots of walking in slippery terrain (at least this time of the year). In case you want or need to store your luggage or backpacks, there's a locker area right next to the information booth where the bus leaves you, unfortunately, the space is super limited and there might not be available lockers, so a good option is the cafeteria right in front of it or one of the hotels around the zone (they'd let you know which one at the information stop). Imo, the walk is gorgeous, but you won't see any macaques until you pay the entrance fee. You'll see some monkeys when you first enter, but the "monkey pool" is a little bit further and is where you'll see the monkeys freely roaming around you. Overall, we loved the experience and it's one of those places that look exactly like in the pictures.
Very special place. Between transportation+ the tickets, the price is high but is worthy
Long walk to the park is totally worth it. Very nice place and scenery to take photos. Is a must to visit when you come Nagano.
A relatively easy hike in (~25 mins). Get there early before it gets too crowded. Also because the monkeys tend to move back to the forest later in the day.
Nice place to see the snow monkey 🐒
この場所にたどり着くまで大変でしたが着いたらおサルさんが可愛く疲れも癒される感じでした
