The Great Salt Lake, a truly remarkable natural wonder in the heart of the American West, offers an experience unlike any other. Formed from the remnants of Lake Bonavville, this inland salt sea – the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere – presents a landscape dramatically shaped by evaporation. Due to the semi-arid climate, water loss is almost entirely through evaporation, resulting in extraordinarily high salinity levels, sometimes reaching eight times that of the ocean. Recent satellite studies highlight the lake’s remarkable dynamic nature, with its surface shifting significantly between periods of abundance and scarcity.
During calm days, the shallow waters create a stunning mirror effect, reflecting the vast expanse of the sky across tens of square miles. However, the past decade has witnessed a concerning trend – a substantial reduction in water inflow has led to the exposure of immense salt flats. A visit to the lake is an immediate immersion into an extreme environment; the water is incredibly buoyant, allowing visitors to float effortlessly. It’s a sensation quite startling, revealing the density of this unique ecosystem.
Recent visitor feedback provides a mixed perspective, with some praising the otherworldly beauty and feeling of being on another planet, noting the distinctive pink hue caused by algae, while others have commented on the increasing prevalence of sand and salt. You can explore the shoreline at locations like Blackrock, where historical markers remind us of the trail pioneer routes that once traversed this region. Consider travelling by autocarro to reach the lake and be prepared for a truly unforgettable, and occasionally stark, experience.

Standing at the edge of the Great Salt Lake felt like being on another planet. The water was an otherworldly pink — algae give it that hue — and so buoyant I floated effortlessly, like in the Dead Sea. I walked along the shore, where salt crystals formed intricate patterns on the mudflats. The air smelled of minerals, and the silence was broken only by gulls circling overhead. At sunset, the pink turned to gold, reflecting in the shallow pools. It’s a place where nature shows its raw, unfiltered self

What lake? The lake is evaporating rapidly. Even when seen by the air.
