Fragas de São Simão Boardwalk: one of the most beautiful walks in Central Portugal
If you are looking for a short, scenic walk that is perfect for combining nature, hiking, and a refreshing swim, the Fragas de São Simão Boardwalk, in Figueiró dos Vinhos, is an excellent choice.
Set within an impressive natural landscape, this route connects three of the most emblematic spots in the region: the Fragas de São Simão River Beach, the Fragas de São Simão Viewpoint, and the charming schist village of Casal de São Simão. Along the way, you will find wooden boardwalks, panoramic stairways, riverside trails, and stunning views over the quartzite rock formations that give the place its name.
It is one of those walks that, despite being short, makes you want to stay longer.
The route
The main route is around 2 km long (4 km there and back) and can be done at a relaxed pace in a few hours, depending on stops for photos, rest, or a swim.
The route is essentially divided into two sections:
Viewpoint to the River Beach
This is the best-known and most photogenic section of the route. The main highlight is the long wooden staircase that winds down the hillside and offers magnificent views over Fragas de São Simão.
The descent is simple and pleasant, but the climb back up can be demanding, especially on hot days, as there is little shade along this section. Bring water and take your time if you visit in summer.
River Beach to Casal de São Simão
From the river beach onwards, the atmosphere changes completely. The route becomes cooler, greener, and shadier, following the Ribeira de Alge through boardwalks, small stairways, and natural trails.
It is a very pleasant and less demanding walk, ideal for extending the outing to the village.
What to visit
Fragas de São Simão
The impressive quartzite rock formations are the great symbol of this place. The natural scenery is truly dramatic and offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Central region.
Fragas de São Simão River Beach
Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful river beaches in Portugal, it is a must-stop on warmer days.
During the bathing season, it usually has:
lifeguard supervision support bar picnic area with barbecues changing rooms and sanitary facilities
It is the perfect place to turn the walk into a full-day outing.
Casal de São Simão
This small schist village looks like it came straight out of a postcard. Narrow streets, traditional stone houses, and a peaceful atmosphere make it an excellent place to end the route at a slower pace.
For those who want to walk more
If you want to extend the experience, you can combine this route with PR1 FVN, the Schist Trail of Figueiró dos Vinhos, a circular trail of around 5 km that lets you explore the whole natural setting in more depth.
