Fundation of the Casa de Mateus: A Treasure of Wine Tourism in Vila Real

Located near Vila Real, in the north of Portugal, the Palace of Mateus is an excellent example of Portuguese Baroque architecture. Known for its Baroque architecture and beautiful gardens, this manor house, built in the first half of the 18th century with a design by Nicolau Nasoni, is considered one of the greatest examples of civil Baroque architecture in Portugal.

Architecture and History

Originally built in 1619, the Palace of Mateus, property of the Casa de Mateus Foundation, was renovated in 1750 by D. Luís António Mourão. Its main facade is characterized by large windows with triangular pediments and a dynamic Baroque play, created by architect Nicolau Nasoni. Inside, the highlights are the carved wooden ceilings, furniture from different periods, and a notable collection of paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Wine Tourism and Culture

The Casa de Mateus Foundation has developed intense cultural activities, notably the "Music Meetings of Casa de Mateus", held every year in the summer. The architectural setting of the Mateus Manor is globally famous through the labels of the well-known rosé wine, produced on the property.
