The Fort of São Pedro was built in the 17th century to defend a hill south of the city. It was rebuilt in the early 19th century in the context of the Peninsular Wars. The fortifications of Elvas occupy the top of a hill that, taken by the enemy, threatened either the Fort of Santa Luzia or the city, or allowed the use of the Amoreira Aqueduct as an obstacle to progress in the field. The Fortins of São Pedro, São Mamede and São Domingos are a Portuguese-British construction. It is with the arrival of Wellington as General of the Anglo-Portuguese-Spanish allied armies in the Iberian Peninsula that from 1811 these small fortifications begin to be built to protect the city.
