Fort São Mateus da Calheta (Angra do Heroísmo)
The Fort São Mateus da Calheta, also referred to as the Prainha of São Mateus Fort, is located in the parish of São Mateus da Calheta, Angra do Heroísmo municipality, on the south coast of the island of Terceira in the Azores. In a dominant position on this stretch of coastline, it was erected as a fortress to defend the anchorage against the attacks of pirates and corsairs, which were once frequent in this region of the Atlantic Ocean. It traded fire with the Fort do Biscoitinho and the Fort da Má Ferramenta. This set of forts cooperated with the Fort do Negrito to the west and with the São Diogo Battery on the distant Monte Brasil to the east.
