In Vila do Conde
Also known more simply as the Vila do Conde Castle, Fort São João (Baptista) was first built in the 1570s. Standing at the mouth of the Ave River, it is named in honour of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the town. However, it was originally named for the Virgin Mary. Built in order to protect this important commercial harbour from attack, the fort consists of five individual bastions, facing the coast, river, and also inland. At one time it would have been similar to a small village, complete with its own water source, chapel, kitchens, dungeons and weapons storeroom to help withstand a siege. Much of this history has been lost now, though its old walls can still be enjoyed as part of a variety of special events, while dining in the restaurant, or spending the night in the boutique hotel that now occupies part of the structure.
